Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Why offer an Online service?
There are important benefits to an Online Occupational Therapy service:
Fast Response
Affordable compared to other private clinic services
Decreased transport costs (go Green:)
Accessible to anyone with internet access, no matter where you live!
Reaching pOTential is an extension of what is already happening in our internet-based world—counselling, meditation coaching, medical advice, fitness programs, developmental programs (e.g. AutismPro). It's time we ask ourselves—why not an online allied health service?
Q. Don't therapy services need to be in 'real time' and face-to-face?
For some families the important part of seeing an OT is the opportunity to express their main concerns, with the aim of gathering ideas and strategies. Online or phone conversation is a great way of doing this. There is nothing wrong with face-to face, however it is no longer the only option.
Q. Is Reaching pOTential a replacement for clinic-based therapy?
No, it is not a replacement for Individual or Group-based therapy programs, if that is what your child needs.
However, in my experience as a therapist and now as a mum, one of the disadvantages of Early Intervention Programs is that therapists are often very busy; they do have demanding caseloads and they have multiple responsibilities or roles. Resources are spread thinly, which means that some needs go unaddressed. I believe that sometimes parents/carers need support NOW or SOONER rather than LATER. And this is where Reaching pOTential can be a critical helping hand. Keep in mind that families, whose child is older and attending Primary or Secondary school, often are seek assistance to find solutions to specific situations, rather than individual therapy for thier child.
Q. Is Reaching pOTential only for families caring for a young child with additional needs?
No. It is a service relevant to all families, no matter what age your child is. It is often the case that once your child goes to school—you will have limited, if any, support in solving issues relating to home and family life. If this scenario sounds familiar, then Reaching pOTential is a key option to keep in mind.
Q. My child is seeing an OT in their therapy program. Do I tell them I am trying an online service?
If you do have an existing therapist, please consider talking to them about Reaching pOTential. But if you prefer not to, that is also ok—that is your prerogative and your business. You do what you feel is right for you and your particular situation.
Q. What models of intervention do you use?
Reaching Potential will use and share a variety of knowledge that is based on:
- Sensory Processing/Integration theory
- Behaviour-based solutions
- Child Development and information that is specific to your childs disability or needs. - Positive Psychology concepts (identifying and utilising strengths)
Q. How is Reaching pOTential different from online discussion/support groups?
A good online support group is worth its weight in gold! I personally have found some great support and ideas from the groups i have registered with. I encourage you to link in with groups that reflect you and your child's situation.
The difference however is that Reaching pOTential is a professional OT service and works with parents/carers to generate ideas and strategies that reflect your child's unique personality and family goals. It is specific to your situation. It is confidential. And shares knowledge that is professionally gained. . . but really FOR YOU to use!
